Expanding Microinsurance in Iran: IRC Identifies Product and Distribution Solutions for Vulnerable Populations
The Insurance Research Center (IRC) has released a research report examining the expansion of microinsurance in Iran. Drawing on both global experience and domestic studies, the report analyzes the role of microinsurance in increasing insurance penetration, supporting low-income populations, and improving the country’s economic structure.

According to the IRC’s Public Relations and International Affairs office, in recent years—and particularly over the past decades—issues such as declining income levels, rising inflation, unemployment, and structural economic weaknesses exacerbated by international sanctions have made the expansion of microinsurance a pressing topic. Microinsurance is seen as a potential solution to increase insurance coverage and enhance penetration within Iran’s economic framework.

The expansion of microinsurance involves providing insurance coverage for low-income and economically vulnerable groups. Beyond improving overall insurance penetration, it can play an important social support role within Iranian society.

In line with this objective, the IRC conducted a research project titled “Expanding Microinsurance in Iran: From Reviewing Global Experience to Determining Product Features and Distribution Channels for Different Target Segments in the Iranian Population.” Supported comprehensively by Saman Insurance Company, the study aims to review international experiences and identify suitable insurance product characteristics.

The project identified distinct clusters within the Iranian population and designed tailored insurance products and distribution channels for each group. This research represents one of the first domestic studies on microinsurance in Iran, conducted by a team of specialists in insurance economics and data analytics.

Among the project’s outcomes is the development of a practical dashboard to identify eligible individuals for different types of microinsurance. This tool, with its high level of accuracy, is intended for operational use and represents a significant step toward implementing microinsurance nationwide.

The full report is available in the Research Reports section of the IRC’s website.
